How to choose the right inverter for an RV or boat?

What is an inverter and how does it work?

An inverter is a voltage converter that transforms your car battery's 12V DC into standard 230V AC — the same as in your home power outlet. This allows you to use household electrical appliances in a car, camper van, boat, or while camping. Inside the device, transistors, a transformer, and a control circuit first convert the direct current into high-frequency alternating current, which is then converted to the correct voltage level.

See Northlund inverters here.

An inverter is usually connected either to the cigarette lighter socket (small models) or directly to the car battery (larger models).

Pure sine wave or modified sine wave?

This is the most important selection criterion. There are two main types of inverters:

  • Pure Sine Wave — produces the exact same waveform as mains power. Safe for all devices, including sensitive electronics like laptops, medical equipment, and hi-fi systems. We always recommend a pure sine wave.
  • Modified Sine Wave — a more affordable option that is suitable for most basic purposes, such as lamps and simple power tools. However, it can cause problems for sensitive devices.

Recommendation: Always choose a pure sine wave — it protects your equipment and works with all devices.

What is an inverter used for?

An inverter enables versatile use of devices on the go:

  • On business trips — laptops, phones, and other office equipment stay charged
  • Camping — hot plates, mini-fridges, or lighting work without mains power
  • Professional use — power tools work on the job site without a separate generator
  • In a camper van or boat — TV, coffee maker, and other household appliances ready for use

How much power do you need?

Calculate the total wattage of all devices you will use simultaneously and add a 20–30% power reserve. Remember that many devices require more power at startup than during normal operation.

  • Laptop: 45–90W
  • Mini-fridge: 40–80W
  • LED television: 30–80W
  • Coffee maker: 600–1000W
  • Power tools: 300–1500W

Power levels in practice:

  • 150–300W — charging phones and laptops
  • 500–1000W — small tools and kitchen appliances
  • 1500–3000W — heavy professional use and more powerful devices

12V or 24V?

  • 12V — the most common in passenger cars, camper vans, and boats. Suitable for most users.
  • 24V — common in heavy vehicles and larger boats. More efficient for large loads.

Check the voltage of your vehicle's battery system before purchasing.

What else should you consider?

  • Safety features — a good inverter has overload protection, short-circuit protection, overvoltage protection, and thermal protection. These protect both the inverter and the connected devices.
  • Cooling — a fan keeps the device cool during long-term use. Place the inverter in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Cabling — use cables thick enough to handle the current load. Cables that are too thin can overheat.
  • Battery capacity — keep the engine running when using heavier appliances so the alternator keeps the battery charged. Always disconnect the inverter after use.
  • Certifications — the CE mark is mandatory in the EU.
  • Warranty — high-quality inverters have at least a 24-month warranty.
